Dearest reader, this author simply must share her thoughts on the first part of season three. One must share one’s thoughts, must one not?
Noooo, I spent a few minutes doing my best Penelope impression and it quickly tired. I don’t think many people will be surprised to hear that this is not going to be a serious review of the recent Bridgerton Netflix drop; I suggest you read this if that’s what you feel like reading.
I’m an English teacher. I love reading classic novels. I love reading ‘trash’ and everything in-between. I long for pure recreations of said novels on the screen. I am a Media Studies teacher and I watch almost everything with half of my mind in critique mode.
But, sometimes, I get sooooo bored and annoyed by the way that EVERYONE (I’m going to be speaking with hyperbole) seems to feel the need to pull everything apart. Why can’t we just enjoy what’s in front of us? I know that the version of life presented in Bridgerton is complete fantasy. I could write essays about the representations (good and bad) of black, white, disabled, gay, straight humans and the plethora of representations I have missed. But, I’m not going to , because rightly or wrongly, there are no rules, and I’m glad. I can’t bloody wait to find out what happens next. It won’t stop the shit show that is our country and planet at the moment, but it made me smile a lot. Colours, costumes, hair, make-up, furrowed brows, wigs, drama, all of it. I love it.
SPOILER ALERT: my favourite relationship so far has been the (GASP- I think neuro-divergent) silent love match between Francesca Bridgerton (the Sparkler) and Lord Kilmartin. Where colliding passions failed between Penelope and her very tall, blonde, naturalist suitor; their shared love of silence and just the right notes seems to be working well.
By coincidence, my brilliant brother has just recorded a version of a song that was played at the end of a What We Do in the Shadows episode: No Rules.
I haven’t listened to the original, because this is brilliant- please, please treat yourself to 2 mins 29 seconds of smiles and the idea that there are no rules so let’s write our songs, rambles, novels, TV shows without obeying one of them!
